What are Joint Injections?

Joint Injections with Platelet-rich plasma therapy, sometimes called PRP therapy or Stem Cell therapy, attempts to take advantage of natural healing properties to repair damaged cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, or even bone. Joint injections are injections of different medications used to temporarily treat joint pain.

The types of joint injections available to patients include: STEM CELLS – Placental tissue matrix (PTM) injections: Placental tissue matrix injections, also called PTM injections, use placental tissue collected after a healthy birth. Mothers can choose to donate their placenta after giving birth to a child. Placental tissue helps decrease inflammation and promote healing because it contains amniotic stem cells.

Corticosteroid injections: Corticosteroid injections use a combination of steroid medication and an anesthetic to reduce inflammation in order to alleviate pain.

Hyaluronic acid injections: Hyaluronic acid injections are typically used in the knee. These injections are applied when corticosteroid injections are not successful in relieving pain. Hyaluronic acid is similar to the naturally occurring substance in the body that lubricates the joints. By injecting additional hyaluronic acid into the knee, doctors aim to create more lubrication in the joint, helping it to function properly.

Platelet-rich plasma injections: Platelet-rich-plasma injections, also called PRP injections, use the patient’s own blood to stimulate and encourage the body’s natural healing process of the cartilage and tissues within the joints.

Benefits

Pain injections for the joints offer a minimally invasive option for pain relief without the need for surgery. Some injections, like Stem cells or placental injections and platelet-rich plasma injections, provide additional benefits because they are free of steroids and contain naturally occurring substances (such as blood platelets and stem cells) to help reduce inflammation.

What to Expect

Your first consultation and examination will determine the extent of your joint injury and you and your Practitioner will discuss treatment and what can be done to restore strength, mobility, and range of motion.

A small amount of blood will be drawn and separated in a centrifuge from which the PRP portion is extracted. IF you are doing Stem Cells, there is no need for blood draw as Stem Cells will be provided.

The area to be injected is anesthetized with local anesthetic, or with an ultrasound guided nerve bock for more complex, deeper injuries.

PRP or Stem Cells is injected directly into the painful and inflamed joint to accelerate the healing process. If there is significant amount of scar tissue in the injury, it may be loosened with the needle to help increase blood supply.

PRP and Stem Cell therapy has been shown through use to be safe for most patients.

Most procedures take less than an hour and a half, of which only about 30 minutes is the procedure itself. Regenerated healthy tissue may take weeks to produce, so this therapy is not an instant cure. Most patients can return to work the next day. The final healing process could require several weeks, depending upon the kind and degree of injury. However, a successful PRP or Stem Cell procedure will not require the recovery time associated with surgery. Chronic tendon injuries generally take the longest to heal.
